A new report on corporate concentration in food and farming confirms that the global food chain is controlled by a handful of transnational corporations.

A few weeks ago, the ETC Group and Grain published the 2026 edition of Top 10 Agribusiness Giants, a study they have been developing and updating for decades, which takes on particular significance against a backdrop of multiple crises, wars and genocides, where hunger is used as a weapon.

This document not only presents compelling figures about the oligopolies in six key agricultural sectors: commercial seeds, pesticides, synthetic fertilisers, farm machinery, animal pharmaceuticals and livestock genetics, but also warns of the entry of new and powerful transnational players into the food industry.

‘Many of the largest seed, pesticide, fertiliser and machinery companies are partnering with tech giants like Microsoft, Google, Amazon and Meta. These big tech companies are rolling out digital agriculture programmes across the Global South through government programmes that farmers rely on for subsidies, inputs and other extension services’ states the report’s introduction.
