The work of Palestinian journalists and press workers in covering the genocide perpetrated by the state of Israel in Gaza will always be remembered among the most courageous, responsible and committed manifestations of communication work worldwide.
We, the grassroots media outlets that have prepared this statement, vehemently condemn and repudiate the Israeli policy of exterminating journalists. With that same vigour, we demand that states and relevant international institutions ensure an end to this practice of killing and the genocide of the Palestinian people in Gaza.
Our Palestinian colleagues inspire in us deep admiration and gratitude. They remind us and teach us, minute by minute, about the dignity with which we must carry out our work and the necessary commitment to ensuring peoples’ right to information. To our communication comrades in Gaza, we offer our most heartfelt solidarity and respect. We offer them our commitment to not remain silent and to continue reporting on what is happening in Gaza.
Since 7 October 2023 to the present day, the state of Israel has deliberately and intentionally killed more than 250 journalists and communication workers. The attack on 10 August 2025 against a tent clearly marked as press, which left six journalists dead, is just one example of the audacity and impunity with which Israel has turned media outlets and press workers into military targets. Israeli attacks have so far damaged or destroyed more than 40 media facilities in Gaza.
This targeted annihilation of journalists is part of Israel’s policy of ethnic cleansing of the Palestinian people and its failed efforts to cover up what is happening in Gaza and impose its own narratives by force. In fact, in mid-August 2025, the existence of a secret intelligence unit of the Israeli army, called the Legitimisation Cell, was made public. It was revealed that the unit was tasked with linking Palestinian journalists to Hamas to discredit them, justify Israel’s assassinations and minimise international outrage.
Moreover, Israel has banned international media from entering Gaza since 27 October 2023 – an unprecedented measure in the modern era. The Associated Press, Reporters Without Borders (RSF) and the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) have repeatedly demanded that the international press be allowed in, and several mainstream media outlets have even joined this request through formal channels.
The goal of Zionism is to erase the existence of the Palestinian people. To do so, they must erase their history, their memory and their records, and therefore must eliminate those who are tasked with that work. Israel murders journalists to manipulate narratives and hide the truth. When delegitimising and criminalising are not enough, what is left is to kill. The narratives that Israel tries to impose are based on lies and on the cover-up of hate speech presented as facts.
But Israel’s great effort to impose a media blackout, and thus its narrative, has failed. Palestinian journalists, risking their lives every day, have made sure that the whole world is witness to the genocide in Gaza – the first genocide to be broadcast live to all humankind.
Our Palestinian press colleagues have been starved, persecuted and threatened, marked as military targets, bombed and burned alive.
No military conflict in history has ever had so many journalists killed. Even wars have binding international regulations, but Israel has made sure to violate all of them. The work of journalists in war scenarios must be protected. Attacking them is a war crime and a serious violation of international humanitarian law. The murders of Palestinian journalists and media workers in Gaza must stop now, as must Israel’s colonial project and genocide of the Palestinian people, who are native to their land.
With the end of the genocide in Gaza as an urgent horizon, as free, alternative and grassroots communications media committed to all struggles for life, the sovereignty of peoples and the Palestinian cause in particular, we accompany and stand in solidarity with our colleagues in Gaza. We will not falter in our task of amplifying their voices and those of their people internationally. Until Palestine is free!
