Today marks the 8th day of hunger strike in demand of Lula´s freedom and the restoration of democracy in Brazil. The activists on hunger strike requested a hearing with the ministers of the Federal Supreme Court. The hunger is part of the mobilizations plan, including a national march that will start on August 10th.

The hunger strike is being carried out by Vilmar Pacífico, Zonália Santos and Jaime Amorim (of the Landless Rural Workers Movement), Rafaela Alves and Frei Sérgio Görgen (of the Small Farmers Movement MPA), Luiz Gonzaga (“Gegê” of Central de los Movimientos Populares CMP) and Leonardo Armando of the Movimiento Levante Popular de la Juventud.

All of them will face on Tuesday the Federal Supreme Court members, who have the power to decide over the freedom of former president Luis Inácio Lula da Silva, currently imprisoned in Curitiba, Paraná.

Meanwhile, on Monday 6th there was a political event where the activists on hunger strike met with the Semi-Arid Against Hunger Caravan, which travelled for 4 thousand kilometers throughout Brazil demanding policies to combat poverty and hunger, and which has returned to the country after the Parliamentary coup d´Etat against Dilma Roussef in 2016.
